Onkyo THX-Certified HTiB System Launches with Dolby Atmos, HDMI 2.0, and Wi-Fi

September 3, 2014

OSAKA, JAPAN. Onkyo’s popular THX® I/S Plus™-certified HTiB system—which offers theater-reference sound quality in a convenient one-carton package—has been revitalized for Dolby Atmos®, HDMI® 2.0, HDCP 2.2, Wi-Fi®, and built-in Bluetooth.

The HT-S9700THX comprises a high-current 7.2-channel network A/V receiver with Dual 32-bit DSP Engines for Dolby Atmos, a quality seven-channel A-OMF speaker package, and a sealed front-firing subwoofer.

Dolby Atmos—a multidimensional audio format developed for commercial cinemas and now available for home theaters—places and moves sound anywhere in the room, including overhead, with extraordinary precision. Effects that originate from above (such as aircraft, raindrops, or birdcalls) are passed through the receiver’s height channels via the user’s choice of in-ceiling speakers, Dolby Atmos-enabled front speakers, or the new Onkyo SKH-410 wall-mountable speaker system. Alternatively, owners of the HT-S9700THX package can experience the Dolby Atmos effect right out of the box by employing the included rear surround speakers in wall-mount front height configuration.

Onkyo’s high-current WRAT amplification system is the perfect platform to showcase Dolby Atmos sound. At its core is a custom high-output transformer and customized capacitors driving Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry amplification on the front and center channels. Unique low-distortion, low-NFB topology features a fully discrete output stage with low-impedance transistors to guarantee powerful, accurate, and musical audio reproduction.

This time-proven combination of amp technologies exceeds THX requirements for theater-reference performance, with both receiver and speakers subjected to a barrage of independent laboratory bench tests analyzing every aspect of audio performance.

Seven of the nine HDMI terminals support 4K/60 Hz video and 21:9 theater aspect, while HDCP 2.2 compatibility on Input 3 and Main Out enables playback of DRM-protected 4K and Full HD video. Consistently rated by media professionals for bona fide five-star performance, Qdeo™ processing technology upscales video from sources such as DVDs and game consoles to flawless Full HD or 4K resolution. Onkyo also includes a frontside MHL™ input for smartphone and tablet connection, as well as a phono input and a comprehensive array of legacy A/V inputs.

Perhaps the best equipped in the HTiB category, the receiver includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming. A free smartphone control app is available to control high-resolution network audio streaming (including 5.6 MHz DSD, Dolby® TrueHD, and gapless 192/24 FLAC and WAV) via DLNA® while supporting smartphone and tablet audio over Wi-Fi. Users can also enjoy wireless audio via Bluetooth with Advanced Music Optimizer compensating for lower-quality compressed digital files.

Once the system is unboxed and connected, users are guided through an easy-to-follow setup procedure that includes stress-free AccuEQ room correction. As well as allowing playback of 96 kHz surround formats without downsampling, AccuEQ bypasses the front channels to allow for clear and natural stereo playback. The receiver also features an overlaid graphical user interface via HDMI with Quick Set-up facilitating adjustment to sound programs, speaker levels, and video settings without interruption to the program. Hybrid Standby, which enables cold start-up via remote app and HDMI passthrough, further enhances everyday usability.

Full-sized two-way speakers complete with A-OMF (Advanced Onkyo Micro Fiber) woofers and soft-dome tweeters ensure that high-impact surround-sound is felt from every direction, while the heavyweight acoustic-suspension subwoofer delivers 120 W of musical bass power through a front-firing 30 cm cone. Factory tuned and perfectly matched, this THX-certified system delivers extremely powerful sound without breaking the bank.

Since the birth of home theater, Onkyo has been striving to bring the excitement of commercial multiplex entertainment to living rooms all over the world. Partnerships with the industry’s best technology companies—along with continual research and development into proprietary innovations—has led to world-class home theater products that remain in reach of average people. By continuing to refine its products, and by constantly enhancing all-round home entertainment performance and usability, Onkyo delivers pure emotion to users on any budget.
